BULLETIN CONNECTION
In today's second reading St. Paul reviews the commandments. You know the ones he quotes: don't kill; don't steal; don't commit adultery. He doesn't bother listing them all, but his direction is clear. He has spent time in his Letter to the Romans outlining that the law is extensive. The commandments of the books of Exodus and Deuteronomy are summaries of that law, which has a larger dimension.
Paul gets to the point in chapter 13, from which today's selection comes. The law as given by God to Moses and lived by the Hebrew people in the years up to Jesus is fulfilled by Christ. He has given to his followers a way that includes and reached beyond the law of Moses.
Paul makes it clear that whatever commandments there may be are summed up in the saying "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." He continues, "Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law" (Romans 13:10).
