FATHER GLEN’S THOUGHTS….. This weekend we celebrate the Solemn Holy Day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This great holy feast was instituted in 1950 by Pope Pious XII to bring into focus the role of Mary in our salvation and the reward that awaits those who are free from sin. The pope had been asked by bishops around the world to declare Mary’s Assumption, a teaching long held and accepted by all the faithful, as a solemn feast worthy of being a holy day of obligation. This year it falls on a Sunday and everyone will be able to attend mass and join in the celebration of the honor given to Mary by God Most High for her signal role in salvation history. She was sinless from her conception and remained so throughout her life and we know that as St. Paul says, the wages of sin is death, hence she did not merit death and corruption in the grave which we experience. She was the chosen mother of God and faithfully followed him to the cross. She received the honor of being taken to heaven at the moment of her dying so that she experienced more of a falling asleep rather than the shock of death, and awakened in the glory of heaven in the presence of the Blessed Trinity. In heaven she intercedes for all her spiritual children and hence we honor her this Sunday and everyday for her glorious holiness, purity, and faithfulness and divine maternity. Glory to you O virgin mother of God assumed into heaven and praised by the angels! Father Glen Jenson, Pastor |
AS WE REJOICE & CELEBRATE WITH SISTER BENITA next weekend on her 60th Anniversary as a Sister of St. Francis of Sylvania, Ohio, and her 25 years of service to our parish, let us also take time to remember the gift of so many women from our parish who joined the Sisters of St. Francis, and also the Sisters of St. Francis who have served at Holy Cross. Next weekend the Sisters will be remembered and named at the St. Francis altar. Take a moment to stop at the St. Francis altar at the back of church and offer a prayer for these valiant women who have served the church and our parish so well. |
