Text Box: BULLETIN CONNECTION

An appeal to outside authority is one of the classic positions often adopted in disputes. One of the parties points to - God, the Constitution, the zoning commission, the professor, mom (you fill in the blank) - to buttress this argument that he is right. Such an approach has a certain element of danger in it. The one who makes the appeal presumes that the authority will side with him, something that doesn't always happen. After all, sometimes mom is so fed up that she sends both arguing children to their rooms!

The man in today’s Gospel wanted Jesus to order his brother to give him his share of the inheritance. Jesus refused to be drawn into the dispute. Instead he used the opportunity to expand his teaching on wealth - and what it does and doesn’t get us!

Disputes are natural in life. But the way in which we approach them can reveal how well we have taken the message of Jesus to heart. As he tells us in this week’s Gospel: “One’s life does not consist of possessions” (Luke 12:15).

Please remember Holy Cross

Parish in your Will.
