Text Box: BULLETIN CONNECTION

It is a happy coincidence in the Lectionary cycle of readings that once every third year these words from Paul’s letter to the Galatians fall on the weekend closest to the American celebration of independence:

“For freedom Christ set us free” (Galatians 5:1).

Of course Paul was not referring to the American revolution against British rule. He was instead reminding the Galatians that Christ had set them free from sin and the requirements of the Jewish law.

Paul goes on to concretely describe what freedom in Christ truly means: “Do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve one another through love” (5:13).

It is not always easy to translate biblical injunctions into civic life, but it is something for which we strive as Christians. What expectations should we have of politicians (and ourselves) if we want to fulfill the law:

You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
