Text Box: MESSAGE FROM
FATHER JENSON

The Lord in our Gospel this Sunday says that if we look back once we begin to follow him, we will be lost. John and James in the Gospel story, who were nicknamed the “Sons of Thunder,” were clearly enthusiastic and even hot headed about their faith. They clearly thought that anyone who heard Jesus should accept him at once and support him. They failed to recognize the patience of Jesus with sinners and others and the fact that he did not demand acceptance of his message, he tried to convince and win hearts so that people would freely follow him. Their reaction to the Samaritan rejection of Jesus was angry and thoughtless. We who follow Jesus must be careful not to let anger and hot headedness risk undermining the value of our faith that we hold dear, in the eyes of those we seek to bring to faith, or back to faith.

In just a week, Monday, July 5th, I will be headed off on vacation to the North Shore. I can’t wait. The future holds many challenges for the church in our Archdiocese, and our parishes, as we attempt to move forward to bring the faith to the city around us which is increasingly unchurched. New plans and new initiatives will be called for to deal with these uncertain times. Isn’t it exciting though! Change can bring out the best in the Church to meet the world in the way it most needs to see the Christian people in action.
