Welcome to Church of the Holy Cross

BULLETIN CONNECTION

There is a lot to do. Today's Gospel gives the Christian some pretty simple instructions as to what Jesus wants of his disciples: "Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons." At the same time we're to announce that "the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

The commission that Jesus gives us could seem overwhelming. Or, we might think that given the context of today's Gospel, it's not really everyone's job. It is only the task of those who are called to be shepherds: bishops, priests, deacons and other ministers of the Church. But remember, the disciples weren't any special group of leaders when Jesus first met them. Peter, Andrew, James and John were fishermen. Matthew was a tax collector. We don't know much about the others. We can assume that they were just ordinary folk when Jesus gave them these tasks.

We can't really get off the hook here. Those instructions are for us, too. So while we're asking the harvest master to send out laborers for the harvest, we may want to look to ourselves as the people who have to do some of the heavy lifting.
