BULLETIN CONNECTION

Matthew had a job! He was a tax collector. Even today it is not a very prized occupation. There aren't many IRS agents who are welcomed with open arms when they show up at the corporate offices of some company. Of course, in Matthew's day a tax collector was considered a cheat, an extortionist, and a collaborator. Their pay was a percentage of the tax collected on behalf of the occupying Roman forces. Up the value of the flock of sheep or the local vineyard and you get an instant pay raise. Not a bad deal!

But Matthew left his job when he got a vocation - a call from Jesus.

Many of us have jobs. Hopefully we're honest in our work and in fulfilling our responsibilities. But all of who are baptized have a vocation. Like Matthew, we are called by Jesus to live the Christian life, to forgive, to love. How well are you answering the call?
