FATHER GLEN’S

THOUGHTS…..

Our Gospel this Sunday continues the call to holiness from our Lord Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew.  As in last Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus raises the bar for us by calling us to a greater love and degree of faith in how we deal with our enemies and those who anger us.  The fifth commandment states that we shall not kill.  Not seeking violent retribution upon someone who has injured or angered us is not enough in the Lord’s eyes if we would be holy as the Lord is holy.  He is calling us to avoid retribution of any kind, seeking to get back at such a person.  He wants us to pray for them as well.  God calls us to a holy way of living in his eyes.

To be holy is to be different, to go beyond the normal ways of the world in handling anger and hurt.  This is a very great challenge.  Fortunately he also provides us with what we need to become holy, himself, in the Eucharist.  God gives us himself in the Eucharist to give us the strength and inspiration that we need to be holy.  In our daily prayer we make use of this power from God received in communion to transform ourselves.

With Lent coming up shortly, may we all be striving for holiness in God’s eyes.  May our Lady help us with the task of striving for holy sainthood.  Mary, help of Christians, pray for us.

Father Glen Jenson, Pastor
