Text Box: BULLETIN CONNECTION

It is interesting the multiple ways the word “net” is used. There is the fishing net of today’s Gospel. There is such a thing as a “safety net,” both literal (for the aerial artist) and figurative (for the poor and elderly). A good investment is said to “net” someone a fortune. And there is the net that many of us use everyday, the “Internet.”

All of those “nets” imply some type of gathering up, whether collecting the fallen tightrope walker, or weaving together a vast amount of information.

Today’s Gospel, with Jesus’ final injunction to Simon about catching something other than fish, is often interpreted as a vocation message. It can be that. But it can also be seen as a call to all of us to help gather people into the community of faith.
