SIGNS OF SOLEMNITY

To know for sure where a day ranks in order of solemnity, the priest or liturgist uses a special book called The Order of Prayer, (for short, “the Ordo”).  Again, the Magnificat or a daily missal is also a good guide.  But everyone who attends mass can get a good idea of where a day ranks simply by noticing how the sanctuary looks.

First, if a day ranks higher in solemnity you’ll see more altar candles lit, especially those on the high altars.  The higher the solemnity of the day, the more likely you’ll see incense being used at Mass and the more likely that a high pulpit will be used.  You may see that vestments are somewhat finer in appearance on days of higher solemnity.  The presence of flowers on the altar are usually a good indication that this is a day (or season) of higher solemnity.  In general, the nicer the sanctuary looks, the higher the solemnity of the day.  Of course, during the very penitential season of Lent solemnity is more properly achieved by an absence of festive decoration.  In Lent, a simple starkness achieves a less festive, but no less solemn, mood.

You may also notice on days of higher solemnity the priest may sing more parts of the Mass.  The congregation, too, may sing their parts of the Mass, such as the Gloria and the Our Father.

God’s creation is holy and He has further sanctified creation by entering into it as Jesus Christ.  It is proper that we should use the sights, sounds and smells of creation to help us enter into an attitude of prayer as we proclaim Christ as our Savior and worship His presence in the sacrifice of the Mass.
