THE SANCITIFCATION OF DAYS For all of us some days during the year are more important than others. We pay special attention to birthdays and wedding anniversaries. We remember loved ones on the anniversaries of their deaths. We may celebrate Thanksgiving Day with a special meal and Independence Day with parades and fire works. In our life of worship the Church has special days as well. Christmas and Easter are obvious examples. In fact, each day of the liturgical calendar fits into one of several categories according to sacred significance, what the Church calls “solemnity.” There are thirteen different categories organized into three different groups: solemnities, feasts and memorials. The days in the first and highest group in order of solemnity are actually called “Solemnities”. The group includes the familiar major holy days: the Easter Triduum, Christmas, Epiphany, Ascension and Pentecost and all Sundays in the seasons of Advent, Lent and Easter. Also included in the first group is Ash Wednesday, the weekdays of Holy Week, all of the days within the octave (the 1st eight days) of Easter. There are other days named as Solemnities, particularly to commemorate important events in the life of our Lord and the Blessed Virgin. Some saint’s days and, in each place, the commemoration of a patron saint or the dedication of a particular church are solemnities. The next group is called “Feasts”. This group includes the Sundays of Christmas season and Ordinary time, feasts of the Lord, the Blessed Virgin and other saints. In each locality, certain days that are special to that place, such as the principal patron of the diocese can also be in this group. In addition, the weekdays of Lent, the weekdays of Advent from December 16 to December 24 and the days within the octave of Christmas are in this group. Days in the third, and last group are called “Memorials”. With respect to saint’s days, some memorials are obligatory and some, of a lower order in solemnity, are optional. All other weekdays are included in this last group. Deacon John Belian |

“COINS FOR CRIBS” is an Advent outreach project at Holy Cross. As we prepare to celebrate the Birth of Baby Jesus at Christmas, our parish will collect coins during Advent that will be used to buy baby cribs. The money collected will be given to “Cradle of Hope” - a non-profit organization that works with mothers and infants in crisis. All coins received in the weekly collection plate will be given to this project. If you prefer to give dollars or a check, please put your gift in an envelope marked “Cradle of Hope.” Last week we collected $257.00. Thank you! |
