Text Box: BULLETIN CONNECTION

John the Baptist, one of the great Advent figures, makes his appearance in today’s Gospel. While John’s role as herald for Jesus is evident in each of the Gospels, St. Luke gives a much more detailed account of John’s role. In the infancy narrative in Luke (chap. 1-2) John’s annunciation and birth parallels the same events in Jesus’ infancy. In today’s selection, the Gospel writer puts the words of Isaiah on John as though he is being given a mantle of prophecy: “A voice of one crying in the desert: “Prepare the way of the Lord.”

We may ask ourselves, “In what way is the life of John the Baptist like my life? How do I prepare the way of the Lord for my family members, or my neighbors, or those with whom I work?”

“COINS FOR CRIBS” -  An Advent outreach program at Holy Cross.  As we prepare to celebrate the Birth of Baby Jesus at Christmas our parish will again collect coins during Advent that will be used for baby cribs.  The money collected will be given to “Cradle of Hope” - a non-profit organization that works with mothers and infants in crisis.  All coins received in the weekly collection plate will be given to this project.  Bring extra coins to Church.  If you prefer to give dollars or a check, please put your gift in an envelope marked “Cradle of Hope.”

Last week we collected $71.00.  Thank you!

CHRISTMAS BASKETS - We are now collecting items for Christmas food baskets.  We need your help!  Can you donate one or two food items?  Please share a can of soup, fruit, vegetables etc.  We also need gifts for adults and children - clothes, games, toys, etc.  Please bring your donations next weekend.  The baskets and gifts will be delivered on Monday, December 18.  Any money received will be used for hams, potatoes, bread and other items for the baskets.  Thank you - Bless you!

RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS The total donated since 1988 - almost $500 million - would pay for just one year of skilled nursing and assisted living for more than 11,000 religious in need of such care today.  Even the extraordinary response to this appeal actually represents a donation of only one dollar per adult Catholic in the United States.  Please give generously.

YOUTH ENVELOPES - The 2007 contribution envelopes for students grades 1 thru 12 are available for pick-up in the vestibule of the Church.

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS EVE MASS - We need children to be Mary, Joseph, angels and shepherds for the 4:00 Christmas Eve Children’s Mass.  There will be a brief practice on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 6:00 PM in Church.  Please call Janice weekdays at the Rectory 612-789-7238.
