BULLETIN CONNECTION
On this second Sunday of Advent, we encounter John the Baptist for the first time. Our Gospel is the very beginning of Mark's Gospel. As a mater of fact, the opening words are, "The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God." Mark wants to be clear that he has some good news to share - good news is what the word "gospel" means.
We don't meet Jesus in the first act of Mark's story. Instead we meet the person who will point the way to him: John the Baptist. He shows up in the typical garb - a clear sign to Mark's readers that this story is going somewhere.
Our Advent can be going somewhere, too. Besides preparing for festivities of Christmas, Advent is also a time to prepare for the coming of Christ at the end of time. A simple question can help:
"Am I now more generous, more prayerful,
more forgiving than I was last Christmas?"
