Text Box: BULLETIN CONNECTION

With elections just a few weeks away, it is easy to draw a parallel between today’s Gospel and political office. Our democracy functions best when those who serve in office are attentive to the needs of their constituents, the men and women who have elected them. Exercising authority in our form of government happens with the consent of the governed.

Of course Jesus was not canonizing a political system. He was describing what was expected of his followers. Being a servant is what is required. Sometimes that is as easy as holding the door for the person behind you. Other times, acting as a servant requires a heroic effort, sometimes to the point of sacrificing one’s own life.

If you haven’t been practicing the little ways of servanthood lately, it is time to get back in the habit. It will prepare you for the larger efforts that may be asked of you in the future.

ALL SOUL’S DAY - You are invited to pray for the souls of the faithful departed on All Soul’s Day, Thursday, November 2.  Masses at Holy Cross will be at 6:45 a.m. and 12:00 noon.  Included in your Sunday collection envelopes is an envelope for All Soul’s Day on which you may write the names of those deceased whom you would like remembered in prayer.  The envelopes will be placed in the sanctuary where they will remain during November.

THIS WEEK YOU ARE RECEIVING a copy of a brochure entitled The Challenge of Faithful Citizenship.  We hope that this brief document will be helpful as you prepare to vote in the upcoming election.  Remember as the Bishops state, “In the Catholic tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue; participation in the political process is a moral obligation.  All believers are called to faithful citizenship, to become informed, active, and responsible participants in the political process.”

SOUTH SIDE AISLE PAINTING - There has been considerable interest from parishioners to continue painting of the church.  Recently I met with the Trustees and Finance Council to discuss this.  The unanimous decision was to continue the painting in order to have the south side completed by Christmas.  The tentative schedule is that the scaffolding will be put up beginning the week of October 23rd and painting will begin October 30th.  During the work the pews on the south side will not be able to be used.  Your continued generosity is needed.  Please use the green “Church Painting” envelope in your packet.  Thank you for your support

PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE SQUIRRELS! - You may have noticed at Holy Cross Church that the squirrels are becoming very friendly with humans.  This is because people are feeding them.  Recent news reports have indicated that hand feeding causes aggressiveness in squirrels.  They will chase, scratch and jump on you.  One news report indicated some people have been bitten.  Please be wise and do not feed the squirrels.

ST. FRANCIS GUILD SOCIAL TODAY from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in Kolbe Center.  You are invited to join the St. Francis Guild for a fun afternoon of bingo, raffles, prizes, fun and friendship  Everyone is  welcome.
