BULLETIN CONNECTION
While today's Gospel story has wider implications than simply paying taxes, sometimes it is good to focus on the obvious. Most of us don't even worry about taxes until property taxes are due in the beginning of the year or April 15th rolls around.
Catholic social teaching requires that we be concerned about the common good. Our own personal satisfaction is balanced against the needs of others. While cutting taxes may be a politically expedient philosophy, when it is done in such a way that it harms common good, it is morally unacceptable to Catholics.
We would all like to pay less in taxes and have more money to spend on our families and ourselves. But we are also responsible for one another, and that means sacrificing some of our own well-being so that others can have a minimal share in the goods of the earth.
It's a tight balancing act, but so was the situation Jesus was confronted with in the Gospel.
